Air conditioning: the bigger job here
When afternoons stay warm, an air conditioner runs long cycles day after day. The parts that fail under that kind of use are predictable:
- Run capacitors and contactors. Heat and long run times wear them out. An outdoor unit that hums without its fan turning is the classic sign.
- Outdoor coils. Leaves, dust and garden debris pack the fins, and the system loses capacity exactly when it is needed.
- Refrigerant leaks. A system that runs all afternoon without reaching the setting may be low on refrigerant. That always means a leak somewhere; refrigerant is not used up like fuel.
- Condensate drains. Long cooling runs produce a lot of water. A clogged line trips the float switch or leaks into the ceiling under an attic unit.

If your system is old, noisy or no longer keeps up, replacement is worth a look. A few things decide whether a new system works well:
- Sized for the house, not copied from the old unit. We size new equipment from the rooms, windows, insulation and ductwork. An oversized unit short-cycles and wears out sooner; an undersized one runs nonstop on the warmest days.
- Ducts first. Leaky or crushed ducts in the attic waste cooling before it reaches the rooms. Fixing them with duct repair can matter as much as the new unit.
- Central or ductless. Central AC or a heat pump suits a house with sound ducts. For an addition, a converted garage or an upstairs room the ducts never served well, a ductless mini-split is often the simpler fix. Homes on the hillsides often have rooms with large windows facing the afternoon sun, and in a multi-level house the heat rises to the upper floor. The thermostat downstairs is satisfied while the bedrooms upstairs stay warm. Fixes range from balancing the ducts or moving the thermostat to a new thermostat with remote sensors, or a mini-split for the hottest room.
