Fujitsu equipment in San Leandro homes is mostly ductless: Halcyon wall-mounted units in bedrooms and additions, multi-zone systems with one outdoor unit and several indoor units, and Halcyon slim duct units hidden in a ceiling or closet. All of them are inverter heat pumps that both heat and cool. Repair calls fall into a few groups — water leaking from an indoor unit, weak airflow, a flashing-light fault, poor heat on cold mornings, or one zone that will not run.
Normal behavior that looks like a fault
Before calling, it helps to rule out the things a Fujitsu does on purpose:
- Defrost pause. In heating mode, frost builds on the outdoor coil. The system stops heating for a few minutes to clear it, and the indoor fan stops so it does not blow cold air. Steam from the outdoor unit during defrost is normal.
- Mode conflict. On a multi-zone system the outdoor unit runs in one mode at a time. If one room is set to cool and another to heat, one of them waits.
- Slow, quiet running. Inverter units ramp up gradually and then run for long periods at low speed instead of switching on and off. A unit that hums along all day is usually working as designed.
- Remote not responding. Weak batteries, or a remote left in a different mode or fan setting, are a common reason a unit seems dead when nothing has failed.
Reading a Fujitsu fault
When a Fujitsu indoor unit detects a fault, the lamps on its front panel flash in a pattern; a wired wall controller shows the code on its screen. Note which lamps flash, how many times and in what order before you switch the power off, since cutting power can clear the pattern. Along with the model number, that pattern tells the technician whether to look at a sensor, a fan motor, the indoor-outdoor communication or the outdoor unit before the panels come off.
Common repairs by equipment type
| Equipment | What you notice | Usual cause |
|---|---|---|
| Wall-mounted unit | Water running down the wall | Clogged drain, dirty coil, or a drain line that sags |
| Wall-mounted unit | Weak airflow, musty smell | Dirty filters, coil or blower wheel |
| Slim duct unit | Water stain on the ceiling or closet floor | Drain pump or float switch fault, blocked drain |
| Slim duct unit | Some rooms get little air | Dirty return filter, crushed or disconnected duct |
| Multi-zone system | Every indoor unit stops | Outdoor unit, power supply or outdoor board |
| Multi-zone system | Only one indoor unit stops | That unit’s sensor, board, fan motor or communication wiring |
| Any system | Heating and cooling both weak | Refrigerant leak at a flare joint, or a sensor fault |
Refrigerant work is done by EPA-certified technicians, and a leak is found and repaired before any refrigerant is added. Our mini-split repair page covers ductless systems of all brands, and heat pump repair covers the heating side.
Airstage VRF in commercial buildings
Fujitsu’s Airstage VRF systems run many indoor units from shared outdoor units in offices and shops. They are diagnosed from the system’s codes and service data, and their parts are model-specific. That work goes through our commercial HVAC service.
Parts, warranty and what to have ready
Each indoor unit and the outdoor unit carry their own label with the model and serial number — on the side of the indoor unit or under its front cover, and on the side of the outdoor unit. Photograph all of them, especially on a multi-zone system. Fujitsu boards, sensors and fan motors are specific to the model; when one has to be ordered we tell you the parts path and timing before work begins. The manufacturer’s parts warranty depends on the model, the install date and registration, and covers the part rather than the labor. Our repairs carry a 90-day warranty.
Local notes
San Leandro and Castro Valley winters are mild, so a Fujitsu heat pump can carry the heating in its rooms for most of the year. The coldest mornings in December and January bring the defrost and weak-heat questions; summer brings drain and dirty-coil calls from units that run long hours in sun-loaded rooms. Rinsing the washable filters regularly and a yearly cleaning of the coil, blower wheel and drain prevent most of the leaks and smells in the table; see AC maintenance. Adding a room? See mini-split installation.
