Range trouble in San Leandro kitchens usually starts with one clear symptom: a burner that clicks but will not light, a flame that is weak or yellow, an element that stays cold, or an oven that will not come up to temperature. Each has a short list of likely causes — igniters, burner parts, switches, sensors, controls, or the gas or power supply — and they are tested before any part is ordered.
If you smell gas
A brief smell as a burner lights can happen; a smell that lingers is not normal. If you smell gas with the burners off:
- Do not light anything, and do not switch lights or appliances on or off.
- Do not use a phone inside the house.
- Leave, and call the gas utility’s emergency line or 911 from outside.

Gas burners: clicking, no flame, weak flame
Clicks but will not light. The spark has to jump from the igniter to the burner at the right spot, and gas has to reach the ports. A cap that sits off-center after cleaning, ports clogged with food, a cracked igniter or a wet burner all stop ignition. If the cap is seated and the burner is dry, the igniter, its wiring and the spark module get tested next.
Clicks and will not stop. After a boil-over or a wipe-down, moisture in a burner switch can keep the sparking going; it often stops once things dry out. If it keeps clicking with every knob off, a spark switch or the module has failed.
Flame looks wrong. A healthy flame is mostly blue and sits evenly around the burner. Yellow, lazy or lifting flames point to clogged ports, a misplaced cap or a problem with the air and gas mix. They burn less cleanly and produce more carbon monoxide, so treat them as a repair, not a cosmetic issue.
Simmer keeps going out. On pro-style ranges with low-simmer burners — Wolf’s dual-stacked burners or Thermador’s Star burners with ExtraLow — a simmer flame that dies usually traces to dirty ports, a misaligned cap or the reignition system.
Electric and induction cooktops
Coil and radiant glass-top elements fail open, and the switch behind the knob can stick on high or stop working. An element that stays on full no matter where the knob is points to the switch, not the element. Induction cooktops work only with magnetic cookware: if a magnet will not stick to the bottom of the pan, the zone will not heat, and that is not a fault. Real induction faults are electronic — power boards, cooling fans and sensors — and usually come with an error code. Write the code down before you reset anything.
The oven half of the range
Uneven baking, slow preheat or an oven that will not heat has its own set of causes: igniters, elements, temperature sensors, convection fans and relays. What affects the price
Most range repairs fall between $99 and $550, and that includes the safety check. Burner caps, igniters, spark switches and coil elements sit at the low end. Spark modules, oven sensors and glass-top elements are in the middle. Control boards, gas valves and premium-brand parts are at the top. Fuel type matters as well: gas ignition, electric elements, dual-fuel controls and induction electronics each have their own parts and tests. Repair makes sense for a quality range with a clear ignition, sensor, element or control failure.
