Rheem heating and cooling equipment in San Leandro covers the whole range: central air conditioners and heat pumps in side yards, gas furnaces in hall closets and garages, and package units that hold everything in one outdoor cabinet. Rheem is also a water heater maker, so plenty of garages have a Rheem furnace next to a Rheem water heater. Most repairs are familiar, such as a capacitor, an igniter or a clogged drain, but the series and model decide which controls and parts are inside, so we identify the equipment before quoting. We are an independent service company, not affiliated with Rheem.
Rheem series and what they mean for a repair
Rheem sorts its equipment into lines such as Rheem Select, Classic, Classic Plus and the Prestige Series. Higher lines add staged or variable-speed components and smarter controls, such as the EcoNet thermostat and the Comfort Control2 system; simpler lines use conventional thermostat wiring and parts. Two Rheem outdoor units can look alike and still need different parts, so the model number from the data plate is what tells us which repair path applies.
PlusOne Diagnostics: a head start, not a verdict
Many Rheem units with PlusOne Diagnostics show a fault code on the control board, and furnaces flash a status light whose meaning is printed on a chart inside the door. Before you switch the power off and on, take a photo of the code or count the flashes. That saves diagnostic time, but a code names a circuit, not a part. A high-pressure trip on an air conditioner, for example, can come from a dirty outdoor coil, a failed fan motor or a refrigerant problem, and each needs a different repair. We test the circuit the code points to before ordering anything.
Common Rheem repairs
| What you notice | Likely cause | What it usually takes |
|---|---|---|
| Outdoor unit hums but the fan does not spin | Failed capacitor or fan motor | Capacitor or motor replacement |
| A code on the outdoor unit and the AC stops | Pressure or temperature trip from a dirty coil, fan fault or refrigerant problem | Testing the circuit the code points to |
| Furnace clicks but never lights | Igniter, flame sensor or pressure switch | Testing the ignition sequence in order |
| Heat pump blows cool air in heat mode | Defrost cycle, reversing valve or low charge | Watching a full cycle before diagnosing |
| Package unit runs but the house stays warm | Dirty coil, clogged filter or leaking duct connections at the cabinet | Coil, filter and airflow checks |
| Water near the furnace or air handler | Clogged condensate drain | Clearing the drain, checking the float switch |
A Rheem furnace that will not heat follows the same startup sequence as its sister brand; our Ruud page walks through it step by step.
Package units: everything in one cabinet
Some homes and small commercial buildings use a Rheem package unit instead of a split system: the compressor, both coils, the blower and often a gas heat section in one cabinet on a slab or the roof, with the supply and return ducts running through the wall or roof to the house. Everything is serviced outdoors, and the weak spots are outdoors too: the duct connections at the cabinet, the condensate drain and trap, and the panels and seals exposed to sun and rain. A yearly check of the coil, filters and drain, like an AC tune-up, keeps most of these problems small.
What to have ready
- The model and serial number from the data plate on the outdoor unit or package unit, and from the label inside the furnace door. Photos are fine.
- A photo of any code on the control board, or the number of flashes on the furnace status light.
- Roughly when the system was installed and any registration paperwork.
- If the Rheem water heater next to the furnace is acting up too, mention it when you book.
Parts and warranty
Rheem and Ruud equipment is built by the same manufacturer and shares many parts, but the data plate still decides the right one. Simple electrical parts are often replaced on the first visit; control boards, variable-speed motors and EcoNet components are matched to the model and serial number and checked for availability before we quote. Whether a part is still under the manufacturer’s parts warranty depends on the install date and usually on registration. That coverage pays for parts only; our own work carries a 90-day warranty.
Local notes
Rheem cooling calls in San Leandro, San Lorenzo and Castro Valley peak on warm late-summer and early-fall afternoons, and heating calls follow between November and March. Package units on roofs sit in full sun all day, so their panels, seals and duct connections deserve a look at every service visit. For more on each, see AC repair, heat pump repair and furnace repair.
