American Standard furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps and air handlers are common in San Leandro homes, usually as a matched furnace-and-AC pair or a heat pump with an air handler. The faults are the ones any ducted system has: ignition and flame-sensing problems on the furnace, failed capacitors and dirty coils outdoors, refrigerant leaks, clogged condensate drains and restricted airflow. The tier of the equipment decides how the diagnosis goes and which parts are involved.
Silver, Gold and Platinum: what you have
The tier is on the outdoor unit and in the model number on its data plate.
- Silver — entry equipment such as the Silver 16 air conditioner. Typically single-stage, run by a conventional thermostat, with standard electrical parts. Most repairs are straightforward.
- Gold — the middle tier, such as the Gold 17 air conditioner and the Gold S9V2 furnace. The S9V2 is a condensing gas furnace with a variable-speed blower, so its condensate drain, plastic venting and blower motor get extra attention during a no-heat call.
- Platinum — the top tier, such as the Platinum 20 air conditioner and Platinum heat pumps. Variable-speed models use AccuComfort technology and run long, low-speed cycles instead of switching on and off. Their controls, drives and motors are specific to the model, and the system’s own fault codes are the starting point.
Heat pumps and air handlers
Some homes have an American Standard heat pump with an air handler instead of a gas furnace. Heat pump calls have their own list:
- Iced outdoor coil that does not clear — a defrost control, a defrost sensor or low airflow.
- Heats but will not cool, or the reverse — a reversing valve that sticks, or its solenoid or control signal.
- Cold air on the coldest mornings — backup electric heat strips in the air handler that have failed. In the mild East Bay winter the heat pump does most of the work, and the strips mainly help during defrost and on the coldest mornings.
- High electric bills in winter — strips running far more than they should, often because of a thermostat setup issue or a heat pump that is not carrying its share.

Air cleaners, filters and airflow
American Standard also makes indoor air quality equipment, and some homes have an AccuClean whole-home air cleaner or a thick media filter cabinet next to the furnace. Both work well when maintained. When they load up, airflow drops: the AC coil can freeze, the furnace can overheat and trip its limit switch, and a variable-speed blower ramps up and gets louder trying to push air through. Parts and the Trane connection
American Standard shares its parent company and engineering with Trane, and much of the equipment is built on the same designs. That means many replacement parts are common to both brands, which helps availability. The part still has to match the exact model number: two units that look alike can use different boards or motors. Capacitors, contactors and igniters are standard parts; control boards and variable-speed motors are model-specific, and we explain the parts path before any work begins.

Before the visit
- Photograph the data plate on the side of the outdoor unit and the label inside the furnace or air handler panel.
- Note any fault code on the thermostat or blinking light visible through the furnace door.
- Find your install paperwork or registration confirmation if you have it. Registration after installation can decide how long the parts coverage runs, and it covers parts, not labor.
Local notes
In San Lorenzo and San Leandro many post-war homes have the furnace or air handler in a hall closet or garage, with ducts in the attic or crawlspace. Disconnected or crushed duct runs there can make one room stay cold even when the equipment is fine, which is a duct repair job, not an equipment one. Heating calls cluster between November and March; cooling calls come on the warm late-summer and fall afternoons, often in hillside homes where west-facing rooms take the afternoon sun.
